I became interested in constructing muzzle loading rifles during the time I was working on my B.Sc. at Oregon State University. I joined a local muzzle loading club in 1978, shooting in local matches, and became active in eighteenth-century re-enacting. These activities stimulated a desire for additional firearms and led to requests from local friends to build firearms for them. This launched a business venture in design and construction of muzzle loading firearms. An opportunity to attend the National Muzzle Loading Rife Association (NMLRA) Flintlock Seminars in 1982 stimulated an interest in embellishment of decorated flintlocks.
At that time, I also became interested in teaching. A local class held once weekly in my workshop was initiated. This class has evolved into a once monthly mentoring session. In 1991, a couple of us started talking about a West Coast version of a Gun Makers Fair. The Benton Historical Society of Philomath, Oregon lent its upper floor to our first Oregon Gun Makers Fair. From our modest beginning, we have developed the event to include hands-on demonstrations on a wide variety of topics related to building and decorating. Currently, the annual event is held in the Philomath workshop of my friend, Warren Adair. Most years attract approximately forty-five participants. We draw from a group of very talented northwest artisans to conduct the presentations.
In 2008, I received an invitation to teach at the NMLRA seminars held at Western Kentucky University. A class featuring the construction of a Paul Poser rifle was offered and attracted seven student participants. This was a very rewarding ten days of interaction with a great group of guys. I have been pleased to teach classes at this event for the last ten years.
Over the course of thirty five years I have created a large number of muzzle loaders: percussion, flintlocks, rifles, pistols, fowlers, doubles, and a wheel lock. I construct commission projects, with an occasional speculation piece. Two projects for commission currently exist. One is a Carlsbad style Jaeger rifle featuring a refurbished Ottoman Damascus barrel, Circassian Walnut stock, and reproduction mounts from a Caspar Peter Rifle. The second project also feature a refurbished Ottoman Damascus barrel and reproduction mounts from a Freund Jaeger Rifle. I have been making small numbers of custom hunting pouches. These are planned primarily as companion artifacts for European flintlocks. As such, they are lined with fine-textured leather and have hand woven straps. Three styles have developed: the painted flap, the deer leg section flap, and a carved leather flap.
I am a member of the NMLRA, CLA (Past President). I am Founder and Director of the Oregon Gun Makers Fair, and Instructor at NMLRA seminars.
This profession is very pleasing and rewarding to me in its creative opportunities. I would welcome your inquiries about potential projects or instruction.
Best Regards,
Ron Scott
